The History of Christmas

Christmas is a festival observed worldwide among the people of Christian Religion. It is the holiest day after Easter. In Christianity it has very deep roots and attachment. People celebrate the festival by doing many religious and secular activities like they gather at church and sing carols, lit candles, arrange parties, exchange gifts, Santa Claus gives Gifts and chocolates to children and much more of fun is made on this day.

Christmas is celebrated on 25th December every year. The date is derived from the Chronography of 354 AD. But the records state that the first ever celebration of Christmas was held on 6th January with Epiphany. The word Christmas is derived from Christ’s Mass. It is a commemoration of the Birth of Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ was born to virgin mother Mary. Lord Jesus Christ was the sacred leader of the Christian community, whose thoughts and teachings formed the core of the Christian Religion. As per the records birth year of Jesus Christ is estimated in between seven and two BC but the actual year is not known. People in eastern countries celebrate Christmas on 6th January. But it is said that Orthodox churches in Eastern part celebrate it on 25th December only.

Birth of Jesus took place in a very traditional place. It was a stable where Jesus was born. There were animals which were used in farms. The celebration of Christmas was an adoption of the rituals followed by the Pangans who celebrated their winter festival. They used to worship trees, they also used to bring them home and decorate them. This inspired the Christian Veener and the same is followed at the time of Christmas celebration.

The tradition of exchanging gift is inspired from the act of Pre- Christian Rome ruler. He had obligated certain citizens to offer gifts to him as an emperor on certain festivals. This tradition is still continued among the general people to offer gifts and goodies to each other. The Bible says that Jesus Christ was born tin the Palestinian city of Bethlehem. Luke 1:30 – 35 of the Bible states the talk of Mother Mary with an Angel. The talk was:

“Angel: Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.

Mother Mary : How will this be? Since I am a virgin?

Angel : The holy spirits will come on you, and the power of the most  High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

These are the words written in the bible describing the birth of Jesus. Lord Christ grew up in the city of Nazareth i.e. Galilean. Thus the holy birth of Jesus Christ is celebrates as the Christmas Day worldwide in a big mass which ha the very holistic history.
