The History of Christmas
Tree

The celebration of Christmas is incomplete without a
Christmas Tree. As other symbols of Christmas, Christmas Tree also has its
wonderful history and its significance in the celebration of Christmas. It is
the ancient tradition of using trees as a holy thing and before Christianity it
was used by many people as a positive mark. In the ancient age people used the
evergreen trees’ boughs to hang it over their doors and windows. They believed
that the evergreen trees save them from Evil spirits and other bad things that
may happen to them.
People in the northern part believed that the trees
become uneven as the Sun become weak in the winter season. They wait for the
longest night of the year which may fall on December 3rd or 4th
week after which the Sun starts recovering and the trees will grow again when
the sun is healthy. They celebrate this day as they consider the sun their God.
Trees also had its roots in ancient Egypt. It also had importance among the
people of Roman as well as Druids. So it is very clear that trees have a very
significant part in people’s life since the starting of humans. Trees are
considered as the victory of life over death and they inspire us by their lush
green peace.
It is also said that at the time of birth of Jesus
Christ in the fatal winter, the snow was removed magically from all the trees
to provide warmth to lord Jesus. As the tree is in the direction of sky i.e.
heaven, it is considered as a symbol of spirit. The Christmas Tree’s tradition
is considered as a gift from Germany. As per records it is said that in past a
person named Martin Luther once brought Fire tree at home to express his
feelings towards his family. People in Germany then started bringing home tree
and decorate it with candles for the festivals. The Americans adopted the
custom of Christmas Tree so late. Christmas Trees got much popularity from the
dramas played in the middle ages. Trees were used in such plays showing the themes
of Bible.
In the late 18th century different festive and
decorative items for Christmas were imported from Germany to U.S. This lead to
adoption of Christmas Tree in U.S. also. The much popular use of Christmas
started from the 19th century. It is said that the first retail
store for Christmas Tree was set up in New York.
